We Don’t Sing “Onward Christian Soldiers” Anymore

You have a warrior in you! Get your armor on and let God teach you how to fight on your knees!

“A time for war;

A time for peace.”

Ecclesiastes 3:8 TLB

There was a time in the past when God’s people had a stomach for spiritual battles!

We’d raise our voices and sing: “Onward Christian soldiers, marching as to war; with the cross of Jesus, going on before.” (Sabine Baring-Gould) There was militancy in the air, men stood with heads high and acute vision.

We were encouraged to “Stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross.” (George Duffield)  And we wholeheartedly agreed with Martin Luther in his hymn ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God’ that “…though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God has willed His truth to triumph through us!”

In this day of battle-less Christianity for many, we need to be reminded of a very important part of our Kingdom assignment… we’re road builders!

“Prepare a new path for the people.

Build! Build up a highway for them to come to me!

Isaiah 62:10  TPT

This ‘new path’ will lead a multitude of people into the embrace of God’s amazing grace. In Isaiah 40:4 the profit describes the needed preparation for this new road (revival). It involves bringing valleys up and mountains down. In addition, crooked places need to be made straight and rough places made smooth.

New roads don’t begin with lane stripers and gleaming rest areas. The initial stages of this work must be dirty and difficult to deal with the obstacles. Often, the only solution for some obstacles is an earthmover… or dynamite!

Strong spiritual intercession is the Christian equivalent to those two forces!

Intercession isn’t “Lay me down to sleep.” It’s waking up and realizing there’s a war going on and we must sides! One side is destined to win, the other will go down in flames. If the war against  your children is to be won… if the powers of hell arrayed against us is to be thwarted, if you want to witness God move in a way you’ve always hoped for but never achieved you need to pray hard and persistent prayers.

Don’t be surprised at this call to battle. Put on all of your weapons (Ephesians 6). Determine not to give away any promise God has made to you. Quit thinking about any enemy in your life but Satan. He and those who follow him are using spiritual weapons so we’d best not enter the fray without God’s weapons.

“The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” II Corinthians 10:4 NIV

Put on your weapons – stand boldly – win some battles!
