Don’t Jump!

Hopeless

   Your hope can counter  hopelessness!

As the story goes, a man climbed to the top of a tall bridge to attempt to keep a distraught man from jumping. He inquired as to what was so bad to evoke this drastic action. After listening to his tale of woe for several minutes … both men jumped.

It was that bad.

King David’s advisors in Psalm 11 had also witnessed bad news and portents of calamity just around the corner. They advised David to escape to someplace safe. “What can the righteous do but flee?” they reasoned.

There will always be people who see no other option. Life has gotten so bad, so fraught with danger and impending doom that jumping or fleeing are the only options left on their menu of life.

But wait! As David responded to the doomsayers, God is still in heaven and is still in control of his world. Evidence may point to a different conclusion but what the eyes see and ears hear is not the whole story. A child of God is one who has the capability (and responsibility) of seeing through the obvious … to the real.

Scripture attaches the word ‘temporal’ or temporary to what we can see and hear. And that would include news reports, the offerings of the pundits, results of recent polls, conjecturing of people speaking from misinformed information or from perilously terrified hearts.

To the child of God there is always another story to be told.

“(God) holds all creation together.” Colossians 1:17 NLT

“Our Lord is great, with limitless strength; … God puts the fallen on their feet again and pushes the wicked into the ditch.” Psalm 147:5,6 The Message

Yours is the mighty power and glory and victory and majesty. Everything in the heavens and earth is yours,

O Lord, and this is your kingdom … your hand controls power and might, and it is at your discretion

that men are made great and given strength. 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 TLB

“I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me?”

Jeremiah 32:27 New Living Translation

This week when you come in contact with someone who has given in to hopelessness, don’t jump with him. Tell the other side of the story. Fleeing to the mountains for safety isn’t the answer. Trusting God is … every time! He’s not only worthy of our trust, but is the Light at the end of anyone’s darkest tunnel.
